The Caribbean (/ˌkærɪˈbiːən, kəˈrɪbiən/, locally /ˈkærɪbiæn/) (Spanish: El Caribe; French: les Caraïbes; Haitian Creole: Karayib; Dutch: De Caraïben) is a region of the Americas that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (some surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and some bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean) and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America.

The Caribbean countries are sovereign states and dependent territories within the Caribbean region of North America. This region is comprised of the Caribbean Sea and the surrounding coasts that border the sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The area is approximately 1,063,000 square miles, only 92,541 square miles of which is land area. The Caribbean is home to around 43 million people. BEGINNING
Most of the Caribbean inhabited by Carib, Taino, and Arawak Indians.
DISCOVERY
(1492 - 1493) Christopher Columbus made his first voyage to the New World.
COLONIZATION
The Spanish Empire claimed the entire Caribbean & most of Latin America.
REVOLUTION
Haitian forces conquered the French army and became the 1st free black nation.
OCCUPATION
In the early 1900s, the U.S occupied Cuba, Haiti and Dominican Republic.
CATASTROPHE
7.0 earthquake hit Haiti and killed 316,000 people + 1,000,000 homeless.
